DESUN HOSPITAL & HEART INSTITUTE , Kolkata

Hi Friends,
I have admitted my mother in DESUN HOSPITAL & HEART INSTITUTE , Kolkata for the treatment of acute Pancreatitis. I faced a terrible experience in that hospital. The doctors of the
hospital gave unnecessary costly medicine to my mother and the WBC count of blood of my mother reduced severely. They were trying to keep my mother in the hospital for long days unnecessarily to increase the bill amount without giving proper treatment to her.
The health condition of my mother became worse day by day. We finally told the hospital authority to release my mother. We discharged her from that hospital after 20 days of staying in that hospital.
Total bill of that hospital was 2,40,000. After that my mother got admission to a Govt Hospital. The doctors of this hospital treated my mother properly and she got discharge from that hospital just after 3 days. My mother is physically fit now.
Would you please forward this mail to your friends and relatives so that none can further be cheated by DESUN HOSPITAL & HEART INSTITUTE , Kasba, Golpark, E M Bypass , Kolkata-700107

  1. Hello I have the same story....
My father a known case of Multiple-Infarct-Dementia was admitted on 16 January, 2010 at 12.15 PM to ICU at Desun Hospital with a history of vomiting once. The vomitus was speculated as being hematemesis, however was later confirmed as not being so by Dr. Sujoy Maitra, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Desun. At the time of admission, the patient was afebrile, conscious and responding to commands. The patient was put on oxygen, followed by ventilator support, and was administered I.V. Pantoprazole as a precautionary measure. This was followed by drug therapy in the form of injectable Tazobactam/Piperacillin, Linezolid, Midazolam. No blood sample was collected at the time of admission for the purpose of culture and sensitivity. The above-mentioned treatment (ventilator, antibiotics, sedative) was continued till 21 January 2010.

The patient was initially seen by and admitted under Dr. Tapas Ray, who went on leave on or before 18 January 2010 without revising treatment based on current status of the patient. The treatment started on admission was kept ongoing without reference to patients changing condition. The patient was subsequently transferred to the care of Dr. Tapan Kumar Das, who opined that ventilator support for so long was unwarranted for but could not be stopped as the patient was severely sedated.

Additionally, on 21 January 2010, at 11 PM, there was a call from the on-duty RMO at Desun ICU asking for “family of patient admitted to bed...” to our residence stating that the patient was serious and had to be “shifted to the ICU”. On being told that the patient was already in ICU and the family members had visited the same evening and found the patient stable, the RMO disconnected the call. On calling back on the same number, the RMO stated that there was a mistake and refused to divulge his name and reason for call to the family members at that time of the night.

In my opinion, there has been gross neglect on part of the ICU staff at Desun. we have contacted our cousin sister who being Doctor was able to understand that Desun Hospital is just making fool of us and making high bills my cousin sister on consulting another doctor adviced us to immediately remove the patient from DESUN hospital and now is admitted to KPC Medical College Jadavpur for proper treatment. A bill of Rs. 95000.00 has been raised within 5 days, there was no discussion and satisfactory explanation given by DESUN Hospital Management so BEWARE of DESUN HOSPITAL

  2. Had a very troublesome experience at this desun hospital. Negligence with my sister in law had almost pushed her to the brink of crossing the line. She was admitted to the hospital with Dengue fever few days back. On 9th Sep 2012, the blood test done in the morning showed that the platelets have been reduced below 20000 (which is a very critical situation and can cause internal injuries by virus). They told this news in the evening and also said us to arrange for the platelets as they did not had the facility. We were really shocked to hear this and also without clues form where or how to arrange platelets at such a short notice. Luckily, We were able to arrange for that in couple of hours, but the news or monitoring could have been done earlier before this limit was reached.
I read more about Dengue and found that reduction in platelets is one of the major reason for death. My question to their authority is how do they ensure the wellbeing of our beloved when they cannot ensure or monitor round the clock for any unforeseen circumstances. How would a common man run for emergency services when the self proclaimed Best hospital cannot even give us false hope of relief. More worrysome was the behaviour of hospital authorities. It was just one more case for them. I would strongly recommend not to admit their beloved to this negligent hospital.

  6. My father was admitted on 27th December night 2015 due to pneumonia in lungs due to cold. But he admitted the hospital at the night, the very next day morning they asked family member and ask to give consign that for a brain operation. We were surprised that how could they ask for brain surgery where the reason is pneumonia in lungs. They plan to have a brain surgery to draw a huge amount of money. When we deny for the operation, and told them to medicine treatment only...Then they just keep my father neglected. No treatment at all. At last due to seeing this we agree to operate as my father became senseless number of hours. the operation was successful, but after that they keep my father in hospital a long days to drag lacs and lacs money. Worst is atlast my seek father was affected by the hospital-acquired infections. Then it turns to multi-organ failure. And in 26th January 2016 all finished with my father.. he died with cardiac arrest in the hospital. We have seen my father to die the limitless pain. Then push my father's life to the end. We was so socked that we could not do any action against Desun hospital. But we regret that Govt should cancel their license, all doctors are unexperienced, they are just doing practicing here. RMO are junior doctors. They just took us a money making machine. Moreover my father was died due to infections of their hospitals, I must say they have den of infections in their Desun hospital. How could we back my father.. who was not supposed to die even. We still could nt accept it how could he die due to hospital infections. Please be aware of Desun hospital, they have branding, but not treatment.

  10. This is about Desun Hospital, Siliguri. Mrs. Sonali Dey Gupta, F/34 suffered 40% burn injuries and underwent treatment in Burn ICU unit of the hospital for 22 days (from 15th. October, 2017 till 6th. November, 2017) and the final bill raised by the hospital was of an exorbitant amount of
Rs. 7,67,213/-. The discrepancies that we are pointing out in the bill are as follows:

    1. Although they call it a Specialized Burn Unit, but neither Ozone Therapy nor timely AC facility was available during the whole course of treatment
    2. Since, the TPA (Insurance) cover was up to 4.8 lacs, the hospital charged us ICU bed charges as Rs. 8,200/- per day instead of their normal charge of Rs. 6,100/- per day and as promised by the Chief Medical Director, Dr. J P Sharma; even after exhausting the TPA limit, the bed charges were not brought back to normal.
    3. The following tests conducted by the hospital were charged @ almost 3 times the market price (from any reputed lab like Dr. Lal Path Labs, Suraksha Diagnostics or Dr. Reddy's Path Labs, etc.)
    a. Dengue NS1 (Elisa) & MP (P Vivax & Falciparum) charged @ Rs. 3,705/-, actual cost being around Rs. 550/-
    b. Liver function test charged @ Rs. 1,490/-, actual cost being around Rs. 350/-
    c. TSH, T3 and T4 charged @ Rs. 3,170/-, actual cost being around Rs. 600/-
    d. Viral Screening (HbSAg, HCV/HIV) charged @ Rs. 2,750/-, actual cost being around Rs. 650/-
    e. Typhoid IgG & IgM charged @ Rs. 4,040/-, actual cost being around Rs. 450/-
    4. Nebulizer used by the hospital was charged to us @ Rs. 17,980/- whereas the cost of any nebulization machine is around Rs. 1,200/- only
    5. Linen and Accessories were charged every day to us as they claimed had to be "incinerated"; but actually they were re-used multiple times after sterilization
    6. Physiotherapy was charged to us even on the day of operation whereas as per medical practices, physiotherapy should not be carried out on the day of dressing/debridement as the patient would be wriggling with pain
    7. Apron, mask and gloves were charged to us, but these should have been included in the ICU bed charges as these are inevitable aspects of preventing infection
    8. Although entry was restricted for visitors; anybody (hospital staff, electrician, maintenance staff, and sweepers) would enter the ICU premises without putting on precautionary aseptic protection to avoid infection. Visiting hours were also restricted to only 4pm-5pm for family members; whereas burn-injury patients undergo severe psychological trauma and should be allowed to talk to family members for getting motivated from time to time (at least thrice a day)
    9. Lunch timing was compromised on 23/10/2017 because of the discharge formalities of another fellow patient; lunch was served @ 3:45pm. Moreover, patient often complained of non-attendance of the nurses whenever she used to raise a call (in fact, she reduced fluid intake at night hours for the fear of urinating too much without the help of nurses, who were not available during those wee-hours)
    10. Operation Theatre (OT) Charges Rs. 56,000/- each for 5 dressings done; for such simple dressings- very high OT rates were charged
    11. Please refer to the final bill in which Investigation, Doctor’s visit fees & Equipment Procedure have been exorbitantly charged

  11. My Father was admitted under supervision of Dr. Rik Banerjee in ICU. Though he diagnosed the ailment correctly, but the treatment was not amicable. The situation was getting worsened by inexperienced RMOs and nursing staff.

The nursing staff at ICU were worse than aayas we call at home. No proper care and no attentiveness for critical patients. ICU is supposed to be sterile area but all hospital staffs were walking in and out with shoes on like they were roaming in garden. I ultimately had to threaten them of medical negligence, when they asked me for medical discharge.

The staff are very adamant and on been pointed, they denied clinical summary, which is a fundamental right of any patient's attendant, irrespective of how many times a week they want it. Also they showed no interest in improving the cleanliness and safety/ hygiene protocols of ICUs.

I have videos and pictures to prove my points. I will share them with Govt. official first and later post it here.

It was blessing in disguise for me that we took dad to RN Tagore hospital and he was properly taken care of and cured.

The best part is that in 7 days, they charged 15000 RS to us and rest multiple lacks to CGHS. The bill to us should only be of consumables, but they added all sort of fake items and charged for bed matresses (air matresses), which are not consumables. They added 4 time prices for articles/ consumables.

Indian Medical Association and Ministry of Health, Govt of India should ban this hopital to play with lives of Indian citizen.

I am anyways going to write to CGHS director, Honbl. PM of India and Health Minster at Center to shut this hospital down.
